91ÖÆƬ³§ and the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Student Union are excited to be co-hosting Reflections on Belonging, a traveling art exhibition that asks people to reflect on, and actively engage with, questions of identity, community, and belonging. In line with our shared commitments to transformative inclusion, as part of our work towards the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice, this exhibition is designed to inspire viewers to build a community where everyone can truly belong and thrive.
This unique project had artists work with community members to produce works expressing their experiences of discrimination, using a range of creative media. It was led by Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society and funded by the Government of Canada, and it is now traveling to other communities in the Okanagan region and beyond. A publication, Belonging: A Reflection on Creative Resistance and Resilience, captures and documents the community workshops.
The exhibition will be open to 91ÖÆƬ³§ students and employees, and to the broader community, from November 15-November 29, 2024, in the foyer of the Library on the Kelowna Campus. We have partnered with School District #23 and United Against Discrimination to bring this exhibition to a wide audience.
Coinciding with Transgender Awareness Week (November 13-19) and International Education Week (November 18-22), the works included in this exhibition highlight how barriers to inclusion are felt by diverse community members and encourage us to build communities that are more inclusive and equitable for all of us.
